I was in Decorah last week at my mom's. She has woodpeckers that come right up to her kitchen window. I sat there each morning with my coffee and oatmeal and just watched them. It was awesome.

It is a stunning bird. Looks just like Woody.

That is absolutely amazing! My Mom would have given anything to see them that closely. Aren't they just spectacular? What do the other birds do when they come around? Looks like they like what you put in that branch feeder - is it suet or peanut butter?

MNMom- I was thinking that my dad would have loved these moments too. Moments missed. *sigh*
I bought the log feeder specifically to try to get Pileateds. It took about 5 months for a sighting on the feeder. I have two different suet mixes- one is suet with peanut butter and corn meal; the other suet with raisins and nuts.
The other birds don't really even flinch. Pileateds are pretty shy, mellow birds. After the male flew to the tree next door, he was chased by a squirrel.
