We Will Win... In Time

I had the honor of hearing Marilyn Carlson Nelson (Carlson Companies) speak today at work. She reminded me of a poem by Edwin Markham that made me think about the current environment with states passing gay marriage bans and such. The conviction that I must remind myself of is that love will win this fight eventually.
He drew a circle that shut me out--
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took him in!

That sounds like a Capn and Tenille song.

But it's really nice.

Min, I think at least the first two lines can be sung to the tune of Muskrat Love, if I'm not mistaken- not unlike singing Amazing Grace to the tune of Gilligan's Island.

Here's what I was hearing...actual lyrics to their hit, Circles:

He drew a circle that shut me out
He was afraid of what lov was all about
Whenever I saw him he'd be there inside him
Locking his heart in a place to hide it
But oh love and I we knew just where to begin

Yes love and I started a circle to spin
Oh love and I
We drew a circle, beautiful circle
a wonderful circle that took him in

He was a quiet and lonely one
He didn't know that his life had just begun
I knew that I'd be the one to unwind him
Then he could put all his fears behind him

And oh love and I, knew just where to begin
Yes, love and I started a circle to spin
Oh love and I
We drew a circle, beautiful circle
A wonderful circle that took him in

OK, no more martinis for Melinda June and no more Captain and Tenille stealing lines from old poems.

Min- Well, I hope Toni Tenille gave credit to Edwin Markham in her liner notes. Could you go check? No, don't go check. So, have you been a Cap'n n' Tenille fan for a long time or is this a recent development? I don't recall singing "You Better Shop Around" into hair brush mikes at your house in high school.

Min, I forgot we probably didn't have hair brushes in that decade. I'm guessing we had picks cuz we were nappy headed white kids, or wanted to be.

I bet she didn't credit him - we should sue.

I am a C&T fan from way back. I knew every single lyric and had all of their albums in elementary school. As you know, I'd eschewed all things conventional by the time high school rolled around, but the albums were hidden in the basement. Luckily, my brother gave me a C&T greatest hits CD as a joke a few years ago for my birthday, thinking he was teasing me for my childhood obsession, but actually he was reviving my obsession.

We should sue her. Naughty Tenille plagiarist.

Min, when I come to Chicago, we can put on C&T. I'll play air keyboards and we'll straight iron and cut your hair in a perky bob and you can sing leads.
